we have finished all our chores; can we go to town for a spell?” Travis Picket requested.
“You keep working like this Ranger Picket, and you will soon be making Corporal. Why, hell yes you boys can go to town. You have done a good job,” Sergeant Weston Smith said.
The sergeant spent more time than usual fussing about with his hair intending to look spiffy for Madam Porter. Weston Smith never had a fancy for an older woman before, but he sure did now. Although from the looks of it that woman went through men like a sickle through dry hay.
The two women were looking down from above on the balcony of the prosperous saloon and brothel. Fannie Porter was admiring her work. She managed to take the bawdy bordello previously known as Maggie’s Whorehouse and turned it into a distinguished gentlemen’s club, where men can enjoy the pleasures of the musical entertainment and excellent selection of women. For a small price of course.
Each of the tables of chance was busy with gamblers of every description. Especially the roulette wheel, as the rough men of southern Texas stood hypnotized by the spinning wheel with its bright colors and shiny metal. The men with their hard earned, or in some cases stolen cash, bunched in their fists as they watched the magic ball bounce and spin around the big wheel of chance.
The three long bars all lined with men of all sorts, although every man in the establishment made an extra effort to arrive in a more presentable state than was the custom in the now deceased Maggie Murdock’s place of business. Poor Maggie was missed less with each passing day.
At the back of the stage, two piano players played music, although this was not the typical barn-house saloon piano music that most of the rough and rowdy brothels of Laredo played. The more elaborate music was demanding much more of the two musicians who battled each other in outdoing the other’s performance. Leaving these guests of little refinement mesmerized with the sounds emitting from the Baby Grand pianos. Nothing too exceptional for Fannie Porter.
“Come on Garda. Let’s go have a bottle of French Champagne,” Fannie Porter said to Garda Velachi from the balcony, as she headed for the spiral staircase in the Gentlemen’s Club of Laredo. “I aim to spend another evening with that handsome Texas Ranger Weston Smith. You should grab one of those young Rangers and have yourself some fun.”
“I can’t help but worry about Captain Ridge. He has been gone so long now, and he told me he would be back in as little as a couple of days,” Garda said to Fannie. The Italian soprano was now apparently having a fancy for Captain Creek.
“I have found that it is not a good policy to limit one’s self to only one man. I don’t think I have met the man who could make me wholly satisfied. For me, it is more rewarding having a stable of young studs to pleasure me,” Fannie Porter preached in a blithesome nature.
